Eat for the Earth

April 21, 2023

AdobeStock_295000056In honor of Earth Day, this month a good time to consider how we as individuals can do our part to protect the Earth. There are a few ways we can change our diet to better our health while also protecting the environment.

  1. Eat Local
    1. Consider shopping your local farmers' markets for some home-grown foods. By doing this, we reduce carbon emissions from transporting produce across the country or even internationally. It’s a win for the local farmers and the environment.

  2. Buy What’s in Season
    1. Seasonal fruits and vegetables have more flavor & nutrients, and are usually less expensive. This time of year is perfect for strawberries, peaches, and yellow squash. See the website below for the USDA's Seasonal Produce Guide
  3. Eat More Plants
    1. A vegetarian diet certainly isn’t necessary, but it may be a good idea to consider lowering how much meat you eat, while at the same time eating more plants. There are plenty plant-based protein sources such as nuts, beans, and lentils to name a few. This is a great way to help the planet and also improve your health!
