4 Common Migraine Triggers

February 1, 2021

If you are a migraine sufferer, you know just how swiftly and completely they can appear, bringing you to an unexpected, screeching halt for hours or even days at a time. Even more frustrating is when there is no discernable reason behind the sudden attack. How can you possibly protect yourself against something you never see coming? Fortunately, for many patients, there are some triggers that are commonly responsible for migraines, and by identifying these, steps can be taken to prevent future problems.

Migraines and Stress

No big surprise that stress can be a major player when it comes to migraines. In fact, it is the most commonly reported trigger. While it may be impossible to entirely rid your life of stress, there are steps you can take to mitigate it. Focus on staying organized with a regular daily schedule and to-do list so that you know what to expect from day-to-day. Keep cortisol levels low with practices of yoga or meditation and do whatever it takes to get a restful night’s sleep. Finally, if you are a people pleaser, master the art of saying no. The quickest way to stressing yourself out is by taking on more than you can handle.

Migraines and Hormones

Women are far more likely to suffer from migraines than men, and the menstrual period is a common time for this condition to rear its ugly head. This one is definitely more difficult to combat, but some form of hormone regulation such as birth control may be able to help. Speak with your gynecologist to learn more about all of your available options and know that it might take a few attempts to find the one that works for you.

Migraines and Caffeine

Caffeine is a tricky player in the migraine game. While some may be more susceptible to a migraine after consuming caffeine, others find that it helps keep them at bay. It may even be found in some of the over-the-counter medicines commonly used as treatment options. If you believe there may be a correlation between caffeine and your migraines, try going without and remember to check the labels of any medication you take.

Migraines and Light

If you are among the many migraine sufferers who find light to be a trigger, you may feel overwhelmed with how to combat the problem. Sunglasses are an obvious choice for being outdoors, but it is wise to keep them with you indoors as well. When working inside, try to keep lights off and use natural light from windows when possible. Greenlight is the only type that we know does not stimulate migraines, so finding green lightbulbs may help as well.
