Active strains of the influenza virus change from year-to-year, and a new vaccination is needed annually to keep the body's immune response elevated.

## The Flu Shot can Reduce Flu Risk by More than Half

While it isn't foolproof, the flu shot does have a pretty impressive historical record of protecting against the flu. The CDC reports that receiving the flu shot can [reduce your risk of contracting the virus by up to 60 percent](https://www.webmd.com/vaccines/how-effective-is-flu-vaccine#1) as well as minimizing the symptoms if you do contract it.
