Cassidy Bergeron was recently honored as the first recipient of the Lane Lifesaver Award.  Bergeron is a second-year nursing student who works at FASTLane After Hours Urgent Care Clinic in Zachary.

The Lane Lifesaver Award was created to recognize Lane employees who perform a lifesaving heroic act outside the work place.

Thanks to Bergeron, a newborn infant left in a New Roads Walmart bathroom trash can survived.  Bergeron had gone to Walmart after work to run errands when she saw a group of people by the bathroom and stopped to see if she could help. Walmart employees then handed her the baby who had recently been born and abandoned.

"The baby was not breathing, it was turning blue,” said Bergeron. “The first thing that came to mind was to either start CPR or tap it on the back to help it start breathing.”

After making sure that someone had called 911, Bergeron tapped the baby on the back.  “The baby made a sound and then started crying,” she said.  Rescuers credit Bergeron's actions with keeping the baby girl alive.
